Actually, we do know a bit about the dragon at the party. His name was Ferrovax, he was dressed as a Roman centurion (not an outfit-- genuine armor from Roman times) and was pretending to smoke a cigarette to cover the fact he kept blowing out smoke from his mouth.
Also, Word of Jim is that dragons in the Dresdenverse are enormously powerful. Jimmy B said Ferrovax could take on Mab and win. They are forces of the universe, apparently.
And I am now wishing that there was a Dresden Files Lexicon (like the Harry Potter Lexicon (http://www.hp-lexicon.org/)) where I could just look stuff up when I don't remember!
There's actually a couple of Dresden Files wikis that are good for things like that. The wikia one at http://dresdenfiles.wikia.com is most comprehensive, but you have to put up with wikia.
(also: pernwriting anon is going *facepalm*, it's just like Pern only with x instead of th. Butcher, why do you do these things?)
...this is news to me. I may love you just for this. Yes, there is the wikia issues, but I have just learned that the Dragon is (supposedly) going to come back at the end, during the "big apocalyptic trilogy." Which means he comes back.
Thank you, Jim Butcher. You are even more awesome, if that's possible.
...I haven't actually read much Pern, and it's been a while since I've read what I did, so I didn't make the connection.
A tiny, tiny caveat for folks using the Dresden wiki to always double check the source (what? when using a wiki? shocking, I know!) if you get a physical description of a character from there. I have honestly no idea if someone's trolled the various (secondary, mostly) characters too subtly for much lols or what, but they can describe pretty much the opposite of how the characters are in the books-- ex. Mac as "short, squat, and grey hair" instead of tall, gangly/medium-build-as-the-books-go-on, bald.
I never trust wiki's; I once knew a professor who went in to a wiki and completely altered the plot of one of the classic lit stories - I think it was "the Scarlet Letter" but I'm not sure - just to prove that there weren't any checks in the "wiki" system.
It was two weeks before someone noticed and fixed it. I sort of feel sorry for any high school kids who used the wiki during that time. But at the same time, shame on them for not doing their homework!
Ah, okay, I didn't know! I admit I mostly use wikis as a way of making sure I don't miss stuff, so I was using it to remind me of what I needed to check in the books, and I haven't run into any major inaccuracies with it yet, but I'm still new at this. :D
The wikia/wikis associated with the Dresden Files are... uh... kind of terrible, actually, IMO. If I were you, I'd look into Book Two of the Dresden Files RPG, "Our World." Extensive backgrounds on every character in the series and a lot of great information on 'Occult Chicago' as well. It's an invaluable resource.
I have an PDF copy of the book. I uploaded it a while ago here. I also have a hard copy on backorder. But that's been on hold for... fuck months now. I should break down and buy it online... Hm.
Anyway, DL if you want, but if you get use out of it, consider buying the book. It's really quite amazing, covering the entire cast, all the supernatural nasties, Chicago itself, and even has an exclusive short story ("AAA Wizardry").
Also, not to be mean, but people who portray Marcone as coming from money or wealth, check out his profile. He really didn't. :coughs:
Word, on Marcone. I mean, there's a couple of hints in the series early on-- “Quite,” Marcone said. “And my parents, God rest their souls, were in no position to leave me anything, much less articles of silver, or I’d deal with him myself.-- but it's always nice to have somewhere to point people to.
Indeed. Things like that make me want to start a new wikia somewhere. Or maybe just a multi-part fandom primer? :seriously considers: It could be fun to do a writer's resource, covering what's canon and what is accepted fanon and where such fanon came from. Like, a profile on Harry with a caveat explaining the way fandom justifies his chivalry and discussion of the possible history with rape?
DA - with quotes! and page numbers! essays, even (Well, that could be a bit much...).
Also, in response to the possible history with rape - canon instances where rape was hinted at/was a serious possibility, and canon references as to why he wouldn't bring it up, such as his comments that he doesn't like mirrors because he doesn't like looking at himself.
I would separate it out with a basic profile at the top of the page, a summary of the canon, in-book info about the character, then a section for Word of Jim (like Jim's explanation of how Harry watches TV), then popular fanon.
some of those could be pages/essays in and of themselves, but at least it would be a good way of organizing information!
I started doing references for myself, but it was simply too much work that I didn't have time for, and I didn't think anyone would seriously use it.
And I never really got around to what I was looking for, which was the potions we knew Harry used, and of those which we had known ingredients for - ie, the sunlight, money, tequila, etc.
Also, a listing of spells. I *really* want a listing of spells, the "Latin" Harry uses, what the spell does, and what the Latin means, or what Harry's Latin is close to.
No, I don't ask for much from my resources. Really.
That could be so much fun-- and a hella good way to get a different perspective on the sandbox. Not to mention the pure historical relevance of how DID that become fanon anyway? And somewhere to record some of the various fandom theories-- he didn't actually want to fuck his sister to Collin Murphy was taken out by a Skavis, etc.
So, um, in theory. If we were going to attempt this. What would we do it? Dresden Files Fandom Resource?
Fuck, we could even have pages about, like LGI talked about, the sliding scale of Nice Guy Marcone to Dark Motherfucker Marcone and which fics set up the thing about him driving a limo all the time.
oh man, the last thing i need is another Project. but this could be so awesome.
hmm. i'd say start out small. maybe a dwth comm? a la dresden_resource? leaves the comments for people to participate, and tagging would come in seriously handy, plus maybe a delicious account? and if it gets big enough, move it somewhere externally. but. IF it gets big enough. eggs, chickens, self. see also: biting off more than you can chew.
even a fic, vid, mix, community, etc list would be pretty handy-- a central repository of effort, creative output, etc.
if you do this I will love you forever and ever and ever XD I've been reading so much fics that the canon and fanon are getting mixed up in my head. I'll need to re-read the books soon.
I'll probably add a copy to my hardcopy stash eventually (my collection is slowly growing, but it's a very *varied* collection.
I cannot seem to organize my thoughts sometimes, so yeah... every little bit helps. :)
Hmmm... I don't know that I've ever really delved into Marcone's past before, but it certainly must have some impact on his present views. Something to consider when writing him, at least.
I remembered the cigarette and the armor, but not the name bit. XD
Enormously powerful can equal awesome sexytimes, too. :) Hey, we're pairing Harry up with Gods, why not forces of the universe too? Granted, Odin might not be considered as powerful as a dragon... that could be some interesting by-play, too!
