Harry watched the Cadillac drive off and forced himself to stop smiling, because he had nothing to be smiling about. He'd been having such a good day, too, but having to interact with Marcone always left him feeling wound up and frustrated. The scumbag. How did he do that to Harry every time?
Thomas, beside him, looked kind of twitchy, too. In fact he was leaning against a light pole with the strangest expression on his face, like he'd gobbled some rich dessert and he wasn't sure yet whether it was going to agree with him or not.
"Thomas, are you all right?" Harry asked, when Thomas still hadn't opened his eyes a few seconds later.
"Mmm?" he said, then stood up and shook himself. "Yeah, I'm fine. Hey, Harry? You remember that time I made you run along the beach and then took your water bottle away?"
Harry remembered all right. That would be hard to forget. "You were trying to give me an idea of what it was like to go without feeding deeply," Harry said, slightly worried. "Why?"
"Yeah. I wanted to show you what it was like to have to taunt yourself with something you wanted, you wanted so badly it was like air, but all you could allow yourself to do was get so close you were almost there, and then pull yourself away at the last minute, even though not doing it nearly kills you, and you know you're going to force yourself to keep not doing it, forever? And I didn't think there was any other way a mortal could understand what it's like?"
"Yeah, I remember," Harry said.
"Well, forget about it," Thomas said. "I should have known that explaining that to you was pointless."
Wonderful! Concise and to the point, and oh, every sentence and word has its place and is necessary, and it's funny, and sweet and hilarious, ánd Thomas is fantastic, and his little monologue is perfect, and Harry is soo oblivious, and I love this gem of writing! Where can I find your other fics, dear author!
