This is fantastic. And how nitzschean is this questioning of everything. This is already Marcone who believes in his own set of values. Would you reveal how old is Marcone in your opinion in this story? I wonder whether he already started his coup d'état in the Outfit. Or would it be spoilery?
(Canon timeline-wise, Marcone doesn't take over the Outfit until the time of the Restoration of Faith short story, so a few years prior to Storm Front.)
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. In fact, I couldn't just skip over the most life-changing event in John's life, right? :) So it's in the next part (and I'm currently trying to tweak it so that Harry won't immediately recognize the situation when he hears about it in Storm Front)
