You know, it wouldn't even have to be an AU - just Harry is lurking in John's office, and happens to notice an irregularity in some paperwork which was lying around that everybody else missed, and John grabs him and squeezes him and refuses to let him go, because wizards, whatever, magic-users are a dime-a-dozen in Chicago these days, but someone who's a natural at accounting is priceless.

Not so much a dime-a-dozen as Harry tends to be on the same side as John in most of the big supernatural conflicts. Or can be manipulated into a convenient direction. Not as good as having him on staff as a combat wizard, but good enough... The big thing with getting Harry working for John as an accountant is that's going involve getting Harry fully on board with the whole illegal business thing. As a very active participant- I'm guessing that John would want him working on money laundering and probably catching skimmers. Maaaybe tax returns (lest he go the way of Capone) but that's relatively straightforward (and legal) to outsource. This has some serious drama potential for the story of Harry being convinced that him working for the Mob will make Chicago a better place.
I'm also reminded of a recent fic where Hendricks is glad Marcone is finally doing something rather than "sitting and pining" over Harry. Ooh, Hendricks not just being loyal but actively encouraging Marcone to not let Harry go.
I sometimes think that half of the John/Harry interactions can be summed up by "I shall love him and cuddle him and call him Harry! And he shall be my Harry!"
...also I'm not sure that he would be any better at co-opting Accountant Harry than Wizard Harry, but the attempts would be at least as fun to watch!
OMG, somebody totally needs to write a drugged!Marcone fic where he spouts that line. Srsly. I'd love to see Harry's reaction to Johnny-boy cuddling up to him, saying lines like that to whatever fae/wizard/whomever is trying to kill them. Or enlist them. "No, he can't work for you. He's mine."
That is totally priceless. Thank you for that.
(Of course, now I can't keep "just keep swimming" out of my head!)
