Ok. Guys. So nothing as crazy as what you proposed but hopefully, original and entertaining. And if you like, I have so many ideas in this 'verse so we'll see. Only thing: I haven't gotten far in the books yet so I'll apologize for any mistakes on that in advance.
What's in a name?
The door shuddered once more. The runes I have etched upon it will not hold for long and already, I could feel my magic around it weakening.
“How are the kids?” I called out.
“Scared for their lives but otherwise fine,” came back Marcone’s smooth voice. “They know to stay inside the circle.”
He came out of the bedroom looking cool as ever, not a hint of the battle and chase that had taken place on him. His suit was as impeccable and expensive as always and his money-green eyes stared at me piercingly.
“Will it hold?”
I gritted my teeth. Damn bastard. The situation was all his fault anyway.
Alright. Maybe not. But this was his building – one of his recent acquisitions. The kids deciding to squat the seemingly abandoned but ghoul-infested high-rise... that was not his fault.
Still.
The door shuddered once more.
“I guess not,” he answered himself, frowning. “Mr. Dresden, I presume you have come up with a solution, something other than stalling that is.”
Another solution? Really. I came here after hearing about a series of disappearances in the area. Evidence pointed to ghouls, probably one or two. Who would have thought an entire clan had decided to make this their feeding ground? Not to mention the uber-ghoul?
An uber-ghoul! I didn’t even think those things hung out with their far-off descendants outside the Nevernever.
I was in no way prepared to face this. Add in a couple of street kids and Marcone and... this was going to be one of those days.
“Cross our fingers and hope for the best?” I quipped.
He frowned once more, ignoring my answer. “There were four chasing us, including their leader.” He took out a pair of knives. Where had he hidden them? “You can take care of the smaller ones.”
“And let you face the uber-ghoul?” I asked, incredulous. “Are you mad? That thing is nigh indestructible and you think you can actually hurt it, let alone kill it?”
His expression darkened.
“No. I’ll take care of the uber-ghoul. You make sure the others don’t get to the kids.”
“I will defer to your expertise then,” Marcone drawled.
He didn’t like it. Hell, I didn’t like it but it wasn’t like a vanilla mortal, even Gentleman Johnny Marcone, can pose a threat to uber-ghouls. I at least had my magic.
Only, I had no idea how to stop it without bringing the building down on us. And that, that definitely was not an option.
But three ghouls... that’s a lot at once. Another thump on the door. I felt my magic cracking, weakening.
With my knife, I drew a quick line on the palm of my hand.
“Marcone,” I said. There was one last thing I could do, something Bob had mentioned though I have no idea whether it’ll work. Especially with Marcone, reluctant allies though we may be. “There is a quick ritual we can go through that would temporarily boost our powers. Well, my magic and its protection of you. But aside from blood, it’ll require...”
He raised an elegant eyebrow, inviting me to continue.
“Your name. Your true name, or at least part of it.”
“Harry –”
“No, listen. This is supposed to be like a brothers in arms type of thing and it requires trust. Knowing each other’s true name is the first step in that direction.” I hurriedly explained.
He stayed silent for a moment.
“Harry.” He said quietly, his accent strange. British?
“Yeah, I know I know. Super secret past,” I said anxiously. “But an exchange of blood is no enough in this case so if you would hurry up.”
The battering on the door increased but Marcone grasped my bloodied hand with his own, drawing my attention back to him. His eyes glowed an unfamiliar emerald green and I felt a strange power rising. “Harry Pott–”
Heh. I'd find "Hermione after a sex-change and losing her magic" more plausible than HarryP, actually... Harry was not the brilliant ruthless plotter in that trio.
oh no- i really want to read the rest, but I can't remember where it was continued (got this URL there to read the beginning, but now I've lost the origin) Could you tell me where the continuation is?
