If I am remember correctly (might not. Been over a decade since I read pern) the reason why females stopped riding greens as well as stopped doing anything other then make babies and womans work cleaning type stuff was because a plague wiped out so many people that woman had to stop doing anything other then make kids to repopulate the world.
Yeaaaaah. Pern has awesome dragons but some really messed up world building.
